“I decided to pursue a degree apprenticeship because it combined my aspirations for pursuing higher education, while also preparing me for the workplace. ” Robert Rowe

Degree apprenticeships offer a unique blend of university study and workplace experience, allowing young people to earn a degree while building practical skills in their chosen profession. These programs provide a pathway to a full bachelor’s or master’s degree, all while earning a salary and gaining invaluable real-world experience. Robert Rowe, an Apprentice Nation member since 2021, began his degree apprenticeship at Kantar after completing his A-levels. He talked to us about why he chose this route, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and how the experience has shaped his career journey.

Why did you decide to pursue a Degree Apprenticeship?

After finishing A-levels I decided to pursue a degree apprenticeship because it combined my aspirations for pursuing higher education, while also preparing me for the workplace. University is expensive and I was worried about accumulating large amounts of debt. The opportunity to do a degree apprenticeship excited me because I could get paid to attend university while also expanding my professional networks and building up hands-on experience in a work environment.

What was the application process like?

Initially, finding the right apprenticeship felt like a daunting task, but that changed after getting connected with Multiverse–a business that simplifies the application process for apprenticeships. From that point on the application process was simple and a couple of weeks later I found myself living in the city with a 9-5 job, getting paid to attend university.

What have your responsibilities been at your apprenticeship?

My employer, Kantar, is a multi-billion-dollar, leading global insights company offering a variety of services ranging from market research to consumer behavior insights. The responsibilities I take on at my apprenticeship can change on a daily basis. There are 3 rotations to my degree apprenticeship: operations; client services; and new business. With each rotation, my role and responsibilities change. Throughout my year in client services, I built relationships with major brands working within the UK’s largest supermarket chains—commonly referred to in the retail industry as the ‘big four’ or ‘Mults’ (Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrisons), presented analytics and provided support for different areas of their business, such as new business or business development. I also got the chance to comment for several news articles, including Grocer and the Daily Star. Over the course of a year in operations, I spent my time working on the development of new software and critiquing my analytical skills. Now, in new business, I work on outreach to prospective  clients and £100k+ proposals. I have a lot of flexibility at work, which means I’m able to volunteer for other activities. I’m currently an ambassador for the Association of Apprentices, which aims to promote apprenticeships to everyone.

How has your apprenticeship impacted you?

  • Personal and professional growth: Gained valuable skills and insights into the fast-paced, dynamic nature of a city job and its exciting opportunities.
  • Boosted confidence: Improved through regular interactions with senior colleagues and clients.
  • Enhanced communication skills: Developed through exposure to a professional environment and guidance from supportive mentors.

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of pursuing an apprenticeship?

  • Research thoroughly: Explore different apprenticeships to find the one that best aligns with your interests and goals.
  • Align your objectives: Match apprenticeships to your professional aspirations and career plans.
  • Be patient: The application process can be challenging, so stay focused and persistent.
  • Tailor your applications: Highlight your strengths and experiences for each opportunity.
  • Embrace the experience: Use the apprenticeship to learn new skills, build connections, and grow your network.

What are you hoping to do after your apprenticeship?

Now that I’ve completed a full rotation of roles during my apprenticeship, I have a much clearer understanding of the type of career path I want to follow. I’ve realised I thrive in client-facing roles that combine creativity with problem-solving.

Reflecting on the past three years of my Degree Apprenticeship, the moments that stand out most are when I was challenged to think outside the box. This experience has not only equipped me with a strong set of technical skills but has also helped me grow in less tangible ways, like building confidence in the workplace.

Outside of work, I’ve always loved content creation—making cooking videos, cinematography projects, and promotional videos for businesses, including pieces for the British Film Institute. It’s been exciting to bring that passion into my professional life, and I hope to continue blending my creative interests with my career moving forward.

What song or music genre represents your life?

If my life were to be represented in music, it would likely be a mix of various genres with a strong influence from the vibrant and diverse sounds of the 80s. I’d choose Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) as a reference point because of their fusion of rock, pop, and orchestral elements. I’d say their work was pivotal for the music industry as it introduced auto tune elements as an artistic taste, which is similar to the modern day.
