“Apprentice Nation content really helped me prepare for my interviews”
Satwika first came across Apprentice Nation on social media whilst she was looking for an apprenticeship and at first, really enjoyed the content around budgeting and interview skills. Once she dug deeper into the content, she was able to take advantage of additional skills development content, live events and mentor sessions to help her figure out her career path.
She also took part in the Youth Advisor’s Network, a move which led her to really explore the path she wanted to take. A highlight of her journey with Apprentice Nation was when she had the opportunity to visit No.10 Downing Street to discuss apprenticeships and talk about her journey with the Secretary of State for Education!
She told us a bit more about why she chose her apprenticeship and what it involves on a day-to-day basis.
What was your motivation for selecting your apprenticeship with Samsung?
During Covid, I wasn’t sure where I wanted my career to go, and didn’t think uni was the right option for me at that moment in time. I decided to apply to many apprenticeships in the tech industry as I wanted upskill, earn money and gain a qualification at the same time.
What are your key responsibilities?
In the Reward function of HR, my work consists of compensation, benefits, employee recognition and wellbeing. My job ensures we attract and retain top talent in the company. A lot of my work involves coordinating and answering queries from employees about their total compensation and supporting my team with important project cycles.
What are some of the challenges you have faced so far? How have you overcome them?
It has been a very steep learning curve this past year, where juggling work, studies and personal life has been challenging. However, I have learnt better time management skills and communication with my manager to manage expectations against the pace of my work.
Another challenge I have faced is dealing with my own mistakes at the workplace. Unlike school, errors can have costly repercussions at work. When prioritising tasks, I always weigh up accuracy vs delivery time and the impact of any errors.
What are your career aspirations after your apprenticeship?
I’m super excited to complete my apprenticeship and qualifications, and it has inspired me to gain relevant skills to become a future leader. I would like to continue working in a business/corporation, widening my experience in different projects such as marketing or sales.
What’s your advice for anyone considering an apprenticeship?
- Do as much research as you can.
- Find out what types of things you really enjoy doing and combine that with the things that you’re good at to find your area of expertise.
- Look for an industry that’s performing well.
- Book a mentor session with an Apprentice Nation mentor! This will help you to gain insights and information from someone experienced who can help to guide you.
If your lifestyle could be represented in a music artist or track, what would it be and why?
‘Unstoppable’ by Sia – I have achieved many things I never believed I could, and tested my limits while embarking on my apprenticeship. I have significantly grown my confidence and motivation after recovering from depression since 2019/2020. This track says it all.
